Firefighter/Paramedic Richard is Local 4184's newest member to be profiled.

Robbie was hired with the San Marcos Fire Department in 2006, as a Firefighter/Paramedic.

Robbie grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Robbie spent most of his childhood racing BMX.  In 1996, he moved to Canyon Lake, Ca. to compete in BMX racing.  At age 18 he turned Pro and in 1998 he won the World Championship of BMX Racing. In 2001, Robbie graduated from UNL with a degree in Marketing/Advertising.  Robbie immediately went to work for Vans© shoes as an Assistant Marketing Director.

In 2003, while at a Vans© Triple Crown© event, Robbie met an Oceanside Firefighter.  After talking with the OFD Firefighter, Robbie was hooked on the idea of being a Firefighter. Robbie got his EMT certificate and finished the Riverside Community College Firefighter Academy in 2004.

Robbie continues his passion for BMX and the 'fast life'.  In his spare time, he is the front man for a rap group called, "Play Time", and is also a TV host for Fuel TV and Rockstar.com, which televise many freestyle BMX competitions.

During Local 4184's brief interview with Robbie, we asked him a few questions.

Local 4184:  What inspired you to become a fireman?

Robbie:  "Honestly"...it was the idea of working with a group of people that you can count on 24 hours a day.  Knowing that someone would be willing to risk their life for me if I was in danger and/or vice versa, is very powerful.  That is the mentality of the Fire Service, and knowing that, I knew I wanted to be a part of that team.

Local 4184:  How did you end up at San Marcos Fire?

Robbie:  While riding BMX, one of my sponsors was based out of San Marcos.  I had traveled through there a few times and thought that it was a cool city.  While getting my fireman's education, I kept hearing of SMC's reputation of being hardcore and professional, and that was very appealing to me.  SMC sounded like a department that took their job seriously.  So when the opprotunity came to apply, I did.

Local 4184:  Who is the most influential person you've met?

Robbie:  Lance Armstrong

Local 4184:  What is your idea of the 'Perfect' vacation?

Robbie:   Visiting Japan again and spending some quality time visiting Shaolin Tempels and getting a traditional Tebori tattoo, which involves using a set of needles attached to the end of a handle made of wood. The artist then creates a tattoo by pressing the needles rapidly and rhythmically into the skin by hand.  All this while sipping on some Sapporo beer.

Local 4184:  Is there anything else you'd like people to know about you?

Robbie:  I'm very facinated with the Japanese and Chinese culture.  I also like spending time riding my chopper.
