Local 4184 delivered toys and a turkey dinner to a family in San Marcos, Vista, two in Oceanside, and one family on Camp Pendleton.
All of the families were military families who's mom or dad was recently deployed or currently deployed oversees.
All of the extra toys were donated to a day care center on Base that desperately needed new toys for the kids.

Open House is a success!

Thank you for all who participated in the recent 2008 Fire Prevention Open House.  All your efforts were a tremendous help and greatly appreciated.  The event was a great success due to the participation of the on and off-duty personnel.  Your contribution upheld the public’s high perception of our department.

This year we distributed over 1,000 plastic fire helmets, 1,200 balloons, and an undetermined number of stickers, coloring books, pencils, and other education materials. Our total public attendance, including staff, was over 2,000.

We had many interactive opportunities for the public.  Fire helmets were given out after a positive contact teaching stop, drop and roll, and crawling low under smoke.    The fire extinguisher demonstrations were professionally presented and provided another interactive opportunity.  Many children were given the opportunity to squirt a fire hose, dress up as a firefighter, explore fire apparatus, shake hands with Sparky, and watch firefighters climb the aerial ladder.  We also had a tremendous opportunity to show off our new equipment including T1471, ALS equipment, and Rescue equipment. These opportunities would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of all participants.

Special thanks to Josh Wilcox for spending many hours organizing and preparing this event.  This year Josh built a second “kids squirt” station that was a big hit. Every year Josh spends the extra time to make this a successful event. A thanks to Tadd Mannino for preparing a department display, Jessica Madson and Mark Baldwin for the fire prevention displays and activities, Frank Reade for again assisting with the ALS display, Warren Johnson for sponsoring a child friendly golf activity and the senior volunteers for helping out before, during, and after the event.

Thank you again for all your help!

Capt. Matt Wiberg
